Selena Gomez took a break from the public spotlight back in August. Part of the break had to do with her battle with Lupus and the side effects of anxiety and depression, the other part seemed to deal with her identity and the need to find her significance in places other than the crowd’s fickle approval.
Well, Sunday night Selena made an appearance at the AMAs to accept the award for Favorite Female ArtistPop/Rock. In her acceptance speech, Gomez unloaded her heart on an unsuspecting audience, and her words were wise beyond her years.
“I think its safe to say that all of you know my life whether I like it or not. I had to stop because I had everything and I was absolutely broken inside,” Gomez said. “I dont want to see your bodies on Instagram. I want to see whats in here [holds chest]. Im not trying to get validation nor do I need it anymore.”
Gomez has been open about her Christian faith and desire to follow Christ. She regularly attends branches of Hillsong Church and she recently wrote and performed a worship song titled “Nobody” at one of her concerts in the spring. That doesn’t mean she’s a role model or a perfect example, but it does mean she’s in the same spot as all of usbroken and in need of a Savior.
Gomez went on to express her thankfulness to her fans and the gratitude she has for the privilege of doing something she loves every day.
She then wrapped it up with a powerful plea to those who are hurting like she was, “If you are broken you do not have to stay broken. If thats anything whether you respect me or not, thats one thing you should know about me. I care about people. Thank you so much for this. This is for you.
Selena’s speech is a vivid reminder that fame, money, public affirmation and material things will never make us whole. It’s funny how we’re told that time and time again, but it’s just so hard to sink in.
The only thing that will make us whole is Jesus. All other pursuits are poor and broken saviors.
