The woman who has posted more photos of her expertly contoured face than anyone alive sparked controversy with a recent set of photos promoting her new beauty line.
When Kim Kardashian West shared the first promotional images for her new makeup line, people noticed that something was off. Her skin seemed to be significantly darker than normal, and people on Twitter weren’t shy about calling her out for wearing blackface. Now she’s telling her side of the story.

“I would obviously never want to offend anyone. I used an amazing photographer and a team of people. I was really tan when we shot the images, and it might be that the contrast was off,” Kardashian told the New York Times. “But I showed the image to many people, to many in the business. No one brought that to our attention. No one mentioned it.”
The Kardashian-Jenner family has faced a lot of criticism for appropriating black culture, which is part of why these photos were an issue. In the last month alone, Khloe and Kylie were both accused of ripping off black designers with their clothing lines.
Keeping Up With the Kardashians has previously addressed blackface on the show when a white man in blackface as Kanye West approached Kim. She was upset by the incident, saying, “‘It’s like we’re honestly in a time warp. Racial insensitivity, everything from this trip, has just been a true nightmare.”
But, of course, there are more subtle offenses.
“Of course, I have the utmost respect for why people might feel the way they did. But we made the necessary changes to that photo and the rest of the photos,” Kardashian told the Times. “We saw the problem, and we adapted and changed right away. Definitely I have learned from it.”
Kim is realizing stuff, too.
