When we see rich and famous celebrities, it’s easy to think they have it made and are somehow immune to the insecurities and issues that the average person deals with. But they battle the same demons, even Selena Gomez, the insanely famous singer who is also the most popular person on Instagram.
But as she reveals in Vogue, she’s no longer handling her own Instagram account, and not just because she’s too busy (although that would be a legit excuse).
Last October, the twenty-four-year-old checked into rehab to deal with mental health issues which at the time she attributed to “side effects from lupus,” canceling the thirty-fourremaining dates of her Revival tour.
“Tours are a really lonely place for me,” she said. “My self-esteem was shot. I was depressed, anxious.”
“I started to have panic attacks right before getting on stage or right after leaving the stage,” she continued. “Basically I felt I wasn’t good enough, wasn’t capable. I felt I wasn’t giving my fans anything, and they could see it which, I think, was a complete distortion.”
In treatment she lived with six other girls, “Real people who couldnt give two s–ts about who I was, who were fighting for their lives.”
It was during those ninety days that shegave up all social media, and she’s since even deleted the Instagram app.
“As soon as I became the most followed person on Instagram, I sort of freaked out,” Gomez recalls. “It had become so consuming to me. Its what I woke up to and went to sleep to. I was an addict, and it felt like I was seeing things I didnt want to see, like it was putting things in my head that I didnt want to care about.”
“I always end up feeling like shit when I look at Instagram,” she said, despite her 113 million followers. “Which is why Im kind of under the radar, ghosting it a bit.”
She has about seventeenpeople she stays in contact with, and “maybe two are famous.”
Speaking of fame, she’s really not such a fan.
“Look, I love what I do, and I’m aware of how lucky I am, but how can I say this without sounding weird? I just really can’t wait for people to forget about me,” she said.
That’s probably not going to happen any time soon, but kudos for taking control of her life and being authentic throughout the process.
Rock on, Selena.
